On the last day of our Florida trip (18 February) we drove south from Titusville to Miami to catch our evening flight back to the UK. However, on the way we spent time at the outstanding Wakodahatchee Wetland in Delray Beach some 50 miles north of Miami.

The wetland was one of the pleasant surprises of the trip as it has an extensive network of boardwalks and trails that provide great views across the lakes and excellent photographic opportunities. Not surprisingly, we focussed on the waterbirds, getting good shots of Mottled Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Glossy Ibis, Green Heron, White Ibis and Amhinga.

A highlight of our visit was seeing a pair of Anhinga feeding their young on a nest.

As well as birds, Wakodahatchee Wetland has some fascinating reptiles, such as the bizarrely-named Florida Chicken Turtle.

In fact there was so much to see at Wakodahatchee that we stayed longer than we had intended and then came across extensive roadworks on our drive to Miami airport so we were quite late in checking in for our flight. However, it all worked out and we managed to make our flight back to the UK after an excellent 10 days of birding.
