In early June 2026 we took our first holiday focused primarily on observing and photographing butterflies. The trip was to Romania, which has a remarkably diverse range of butterflies as much of the agriculture is still very traditional and there are large areas of flower-filled meadows that provide an ideal habitat for butterflies.
The trip was organised by Greenwings Wildlife Holidays which run a range of holidays for naturalists interested in wildlife and particularly butterflies. Our one-week trip started on Friday 5 June with a flight from London Luton airport to Cluj in Transylvania. All five trip members were on the same fight and in Cluj airport we met our guide Lajos Nemeth who would lead the group. The trip was broadly split into two parts with three nights in Transylvania followed by four nights near Eselnita on the northern bank of the Danube. This trip report has therefore been split into two sections that cover the butterflies and other wildlife we saw in these two regions.
We all thoroughly enjoy the trip and our very experienced guide managed to find all the key target species we were hoping to see. The was the first time that Greenwings had run this tour but we’re sure that it will be popular in the future.
