Our first birding trip of 2014 was to Florida, which is well known as an excellent winter birding destination where you can see a wide range of sub-tropical birds at a number of world-class reserves. On this occasion we were spending 10 days in Florida and decided to do a clockwise loop around the state, which is shown in the map below.

Locations we visited during the trip

1. The Everglades National Park

2. Corkscrew Swamp

3. Ding Darling

4. Hickey’s Creek

5. Lake Okeechobee

6. Joe Overstreet Road

7. Merritt Island

8. Wakodahatchee

There is a lot of information about birding in Florida on the web and we planned the trip around visits to a number of well-known reserves and national parks in the southern part of the state that we’d read about online. Our report is therefore divided into eight sections covering each of these destinations.
