After our short trip into Botswana, on 16 August we drove back into Namibia aiming for our final destination in that country, the Shametu River Lodge. However, soon after we crossed the border we spent some time in the Mahanga Game reserve where we saw a good range of mammals and birds. We were there close to the middle of the day so the light was a bit harsh, but we still got some reasonable photos. A highlight was seeing a Long-toed Lapwing, which was a lifer for us.
We arrived at Shametu River Lodge just after lunch and found that we were staying in a spacious luxury tent close to the Cubango River with a great view across the water from our veranda.
Once settled into our accommodation we did some late afternoon birding around the extensive grounds of the lodge. The birding was a little slow, but we still saw Marico Sunbird, White-bellied Sunbird and White-browed robin-chat. A highlight was the colourful White-browed Robin-chat.
