Distribution from BirdLife International and Cornell
The Diademed Sandpiper-plover (Phegornis mitchelli) is a bird found at high elevations (2,000 to 5,000 m depending on the location) along the Andes from Central Peru to South-central Argentina. It favours peatland and bogs between the frost line and the snow line and it tends to be a very solitary bird.
It gets its name from the ring of white feathers around its head that resemble a diadem worn by royalty and others og high office.
