This was our second trip to the Greek island of Lesbos (also known as Lesvos), and, as with in previous year, we went during May to coincide with the spring migration when many birds move north from Africa to Europe. On our first visit we stayed in the north of the island at the Molyvos Castle Apartments, which were fine, but some way from the main birding areas. For the 2018 visit we therefore decided to stay near Skala Kalloni in the centre of Lesbos, which is a popular location for many of the birders. We chose the Ilyda Residence Suites, which provided spacious accommodation just to the west of Skala Kalloni giving us easy access to the birding areas.
As in previous year, we flew out with Thomas Cook Airlines, leaving from London Gatwick Airport early on 5 May and flying to Mytilini where we picked up our rental car from Billy’s Rent a Car. We were staying on the island for one week and the places we visited and the birds we saw are described in the pages linked below.
