On our last day of the trip (12 May) we drove to the far west of the island to explore some new birding destinations. The poppies were in bloom enhancing the stunning landscape of the island.

We made an early start so as to make the most of the good light before the sun got too high. First we revisited Achladeri Forest to the south of Kalloni and got our best photos yet of the Krueper’s Nuthatch. We also heard and then saw a Common Nightingale.

Once we got to Sigri we drove north along the coast road towards Faneromeni and saw a number of birds in the fields, including Red-backed Shrike, Eurasian Blackbird, Corn Bunting, Spotted Flycatcher and Cirl Bunting.

At Faneromeni we parked near the beach and walked along the coast, seeing Ruddy Shelduck and Little Ringed Plover. A Lesser Kestral flew over, although it was too distant to get a good photograph.
