For our second day on the island (8 May) we decided to spend most of our time along the north coast, where the road high on the cliffs gives spectacular views across the Aegian Sea towards Turkey, which is only 12 km away.

Before we drove north we revisited the lay-by near our hotel and once again had good views of the Subalpine Warbler, which is often seen at this site. Here we also saw a Hooded Crow and got a better view of a Turtle Dove.

Along the north coast there are a number of dry valleys going down to the sea that attract migrating birds and in these we saw Cirl Bunting, Rosy Starling, Black-eared Wheatear and more Subalpine Warblers. By the shore Great Cormorants were sitting on the rocks.

Towards the eastern end of the north coast is the beautiful small town of Skala Sikamineas and we stopped there for a late lunch at a restaurant by the harbour.

After lunch we drove south a short distance into the high interior of the island, then turned west and took the road back towards Molyvos and our hotel. On the way we stopped at a couple of places but the birds were quiet at this time of day, although we still managed to see another Subalpine Warbler. Overhead a Common Buzzard was being mobbed by a Hooded Crow.
