The final stop on our trip was at the spectacular Victoria Falls, where we stayed at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge for two nights. Here we did some birding around the lodge and at nearby sites, but also visited the falls themselves.
There were good birds very close to the lodge, including Trumpeter Hornbills just in front of the main entrance.
Within a short walking distance of the lodge we could also see Vervet Monkeys and lots of Warthogs.
On our full day at Victoria Falls (20 August) we were up early for a breakfast cruise along the Zambezi River. It was wonderful to see the sun come up and the birds appear in such a magical location.
After some photography it was time for breakfast.
A birding highlight of the boat trip was seeing an African Finfoot, which was a lifer for us. But we also had good views of Malachite Kingfisher, African Openbill and Hadada Ibis. We also saw lots of hippopotamus.
No trip to the area would be complete without seeing the falls themselves and soon after our boat trip we made our visit to this world-famous heritage site.
Once back at the lodge we were just in time to see the feeding of the vultures. This takes place every day so the birds know to be ready and once the food comes out dozens descend on the meat.
August 21 was the last day of our tour and we had time in the morning to do some birding before we checked out of the lodge. The Trumpeter Hornbills were once again in the trees and we also saw a Bearded Scrub-robin.
After our final birding session we headed to the Victoria Falls airport for our flight to Johannesburg and then on to London. Thanks to our guide Leon and the planning skills of Lawsons it was an amazing trip and one we would highly recommend to anyone interested in exploring this part of southern Africa.
