Our return from Sea Lion Island was delayed by 24 hours because of bad weather, however there are worse places to be stuck and it gave us a bit more time to go birding and enjoy another night at the lodge. When we arrived back in Stanley mid-morning the following day it gave us time to do something before I returned to work the following day. Phoning around we were lucky enough to find someone at short notice with a 4×4 who was free and able to take us on a half day trip to see the settlement of Goose Green and also visit some of the battlefield sites.

En route to Goose Green

The snow from the storm that had delayed us on Sea Lion Island was still around but it did make the landscape look less bleak than usual.

Goose Green is a small settlement of about 40 people located on Choiseul Sound on the eastern side of the island’s central isthmus.

After visiting the centre of the settlement we drove north towards Darwin and spent time at the memorial to Lieutenant Colonel ‘H’ Jones who died in the battle for Goose Green in 1982.

Finally, we visited the Argentine war cemetery before driving back to Stanley.
