The tanager family of neotropical birds includes species known commonly as tanagers, honeycreepers, grassquits, seedeaters, flowerpiercers and dacnis. It is the second largest bird family after the tyrant flycatchers and comprises 381 species. In recent years a number of species that are referred to as tanagers, such as the Summer Tanager, have been moved to the cardinal family Cardinalidae and this is reflected in where we have included such species on this site.
